The YAKUZA 2nd edition book cover

ODO YAKUZA TOKYO - second edition - cover

Surprise! For those of you who ordered the second edition of YAKUZA, I present you with the new cover image. I hope you like it…

The inside of this second edition is the same as the sold out limited edition… but the last image, binding, chapter paper and cover are different. Read more about that here.

Exciting… In about ten days the second edition will be stitched and bound, the cover attached, and all the books will be individually shrinkwrapped, ready to be packed and shipped.

And so the distribution begins… I’m really really looking forward to it, and at the same time I’m a little scared of this first massive shipment of books I’m going to fulfill during the first week of November. Am I logistically even going to be able to handle it?

Fingers crossed.

Looking forward to the smell of books filling up my house again.

Have a great day today,

a

I receive it two weeks ago, and I’m very disappointed. I expected a more exciting and committed content. More interesting pictures and comments about where were taken. Sorry, but I expected much more..

      Hey Gala,

Thank you for your reply and your feedback. I’m sorry to hear that you expected differently! Of course, It’s not nice to hear that you are not happy, but at the same time I want to learn as well… so I can become better in the future. If you have the time, can you tell me what you expected more in the pictures? Did you want to see more of certain things that are part of Yakuza? My visual language is very much NOT documentary, and I never wanted to be journalistic in nature, so I understand that the story is not linear or descriptive or clear. It is more about a feeling, an intimate personal journey of a westerner in a foreign culture.

I have followed a Yakuza family intimately for two years, and I learned that the Yakuza is not about the actions (like we see in movies), but more about a way of life, an under-the skin tension, a subtlety in social interaction and social pressure, that I try to show in my images. It is the reality that I want to show, I don’t want to show fiction like in the movies. The images you see is what I experienced during those years.

I did not provide any explanation about the images themselves because I believe that they should tell the story alone, and I also feel that my introduction text says all that I need to say… There is much more information here on my website, where I talk a lot about every picture and how I made it and how I felt during the process. Is this content and explanation more of what you expected in the book?

      Have a great day today,

      anton
