Buy the 2nd edition of the book ODO YAKUZA TOKYO

ODO YAKUZA TOKYO
These past two months have been great. Humbling also. More than anything else, I’m incredibly grateful for all the attention YAKUZA gets everywhere… Many good things have happened and I’m hoping many more good things will come. And it started all on BURN magazine with David Alan Harvey as my mentor… I literally owe you everything, amigo.

I’ve literally received more than a thousand emails after the limited edition sold out, asking if there were plans for a second (general) edition of ODO YAKUZA TOKYO. At the time, I’ve always responded with neither “yes” or “no”, mainly because I needed a break in August to think things over… find new projects, do some research, get everything in order, rest my weary mind, take a little nap, etc…

And then came the press attention… attention and support which, without fault, has been super professional and incredibly heartwarming… GEO, GEO Epoche, The Sunday Times, El Pais, BBC, BBC Radio 4, BBC Mundo, Dagens Næringsliv, Blurb, The Japan Times, Chasseur D’Images, Rencontres d’Arles,… so many, and there’s still more to come (stay tuned!).

I’m genuinely happy and excited… And I realize all the above is giving me an opportunity to reach more people with a book than ever before, tell my story to a wider audience… participate.

So here’s the plan:
I literally just called the printer five minutes ago.
Said it felt like it was time for a second edition.

He agreed and started preparing rightaway. He guaranteed that all books will be ready to ship October 30th, 2011. Wow…. just perfect… What else could I wish for…

Since this is not the limited first edition, there will be significant changes in the book: no Japanese transparent paper between chapters, not numbered as part of an edition, a cover change, and a different binding. The image edit will be exactly the same as the first edition though, except for the very last image, which is unique to the limited edition… Yes, for the 500 lucky ones who have supported me in buying the limited edition two months ago, rest assured: your copy is now more valuable than ever… it is a unique object, never to reproduced. Your support has made everything possible in the first place…

The price of this second edition? Also exactly the same. I want the first edition buyers to know that they have something special, but that they did not have to pay a premium price for this. That “extra” in the first edition is my token of appreciation for the trust they gave me.

Back to the second edition: I want to offer a token of trust for people buying this second edition… to me, as an independent artist publishing work, it’s the thing that makes everything worthwile, that personal connection to you, buying the book…

So I’m offering the first 250 people who order a book
a signed copy, and I will add an original YAKUZA print as well.
(UPDATE: on september 12 2011, the first 250 orders were reached)

Again… thank you so much for the hundreds of supportive emails… and asking for a second edition. I heed your call.

And touch wood for me please…

And while you’re at it, buy your copy here below NOW :-)

This is clearly a great book but isn’t 68 euro with shipping an exceedingly high amount to charge for a book?

    • September 9, 2011 at 09:34 // Reply

      Dear Alan,

50 euros for the book is indeed what I ask… i have researched for quite some time and 50€ falls right in the middle of the price bracket for independent photobooks who have no support from publishers or advertising…. this book is a 224 page, 1.5kg book printed on luxury 135gsm paper…

About the shipping: I wish I could do it cheaper, but as an independent publisher, I just cannot have incredibly cheap rates like amazon etc… and selling my book through amazon isn’t an option either.

I would love to know from you, if you by chance know of any cheaper options that are a) insured and b) trackable… then I will ship the book with your shipping solution… a win-win situation… sound good?

      cheers,

I’m studying Japanese culture and I’ve always been interested in that place. The world of Yakuza has always fascinated me, so your project is a like little jewel for me.

You don’t know how thankful I am for this second edition, when I read the first one had been sold out I was desperate. But when I read about this second edition you really made my day, so thank you =)

Very great brook. I commend you on your extensive research and dedication to this subculture. I would highly highly recommend a motion picture surrounding the groups mystique. Deff pitch it to a director that can successfully fuse killbill with goodfella or once upon a time in america. Would be an immediate cult classic for gangsters across the globe.

PS If a position becomes avail, im ready.

      Dear citizenzombie,

Thank you for your message… indeed yes, you will receive your book this week!

To do the distribution as efficiently as possible, I have divided the orders for the book in 3 regions: US region, Asia region, and EU region. EU region I ship myself, and for the other two regions I first ship the books in bulk to a distribution centre in the area, who then ship the individual orders. This makes the shipping cost mush cheaper for the customer, and is easier to manage for me also.

As planned, on October 30 I shipped the bulk shipments for US region and Asia region (and of course I shipped the individual EU orders directly).

Yesterday, the distribution centre in US shipped all its orders and they are underway to the customers now.

Also, I have confirmation that the distribution centre in Tokyo has prepared all shipments and is shipping them today and tomorrow.

So you should definitely have your book this week! I don’t have individual tracking numbers for Japan just yet, but as soon as I have yours, I will email them to you.

Thank you again for your patience… indeed it is a huge job to organize shipping… I am tired… but it is very rewarding and I am learning A LOT… :-)

      cheers,

    Hi Anton,

I’ve already mentioned this in a tweet but my copy of YAKUZA reached me a little over a week ago and as I missed out on the first edition I made sure I placed my order asap this time around. I’m really glad I did as the quality of the book and the photographs within is stunning, really great work. I’ve followed the progress of this story with interest and have been fascinated reading all about it.

The book is sat in pride of place (next to BURN.02 funnily enough) on a shelf and it will definitely get regular views as it has already triggered some inspiration and I’ve been thinking about a long-term project I can put my mind to.

I shall look with interest about any future projects you work on (care to share a sneak of the print you tweeted about?).

    Keep up the great work!

I’ll take everyone along for my new project, just a bit busy now, but as soon as I can write some things, and I’ll be posting them right here… first!

    Hi,

I’ve placed an order and tried to pay by paypal. However, the webpage just turned blank after I logged onto my paypal account. Could you please check if my order successfully placed or not? (I believe you can get my email from this post, right?)

If not, I’ll place the order again. Thanks!

How long does it take to send to Japan by the fastest way?

    • February 20, 2012 at 16:37 // Reply

      Dear Yuito,

      Welcome! :-)

The difference between the limited edition (sold out) and the second edition is the cover image, the transparent paper type in between chapters, the binding (but both are softback) and one extra image (in the limited edition. The limited edition is completely sold out at this point though… There might be some left over copies that turn up sometime, but not yet as of now.

I have my brother doing extra distribution from Tokyo, so if you order for Japan, the shipping cost should be ok and the book should arrive quickly!

(ps luck has it that my brother is just now visiting me for 10 days. so the might be a *slight* delay, but normal shipments will resume first week of march)

      cheers, a

To order the book, just use the shopping cart button above ^^^ here on this page… click on the green button “add to cart”, and then follow instructions.

Everything should hopefully be clear! If you have any trouble, let me know.

Payments are accepted with credit card or PayPal, and shipping in Japan is done with Japan Post.

    If it is from Belgium
Is the mailing cost to China the same even as Japan?

    Yuito

    • April 1, 2012 at 21:22 // Reply

      Dear Yuito,

If I send from Belgium (for a signed copy), the cost is the same for China and Japan.

But normally, books with a destination in Asia are all shipped from Tokyo, so then destination Japan is cheaper than China. If you wish, you can check any shipping price by just choosing another country to see the shipping cost change.

If buy two volumes, how much does the mailing cost cost? Please tell me how to send from Belgium. Is it from a post office? or from an express company?

    • April 3, 2012 at 14:50 // Reply

      Dear Yuito,

shipping cost for 2 books from Belgium is only 2€ more expensive, so you can save a lot by buying two books instead of one!

The books from Belgium are always sent from an express company (EMS/Taxipost) so that there is tracking and insurance.

      cheers,

      Dear Peter,

Thank you for your message and for buying a book… It would be a great pleasure to sign it for you.

Practically speaking, because I physically have to sign the book, it can only be sent from my home in Belgium (instead of from my shipper for the US region), the shipping cost will be a little different than you already paid (add 8.54€). I hope that is ok for you if I just “paypal request” you the difference.

cheers, and thanks again for your order!

Hi Anton, Just wanted to say that your yakuza project is very inspirational. I would love to buy your book however living in New Zealand makes things very expensive, would shipping really be 30 EUR?

    Keep up the good work!
    Jordan

    • April 5, 2012 at 08:45 // Reply

      Dear Jordan,

Unfortunately so… As I’m only a “small fish” I cannot negotiate super rates with shipping companies. The best I can do (and which I have done), is to work with people I trust in different places, who then act as a local shipper on my behalf. In this way for example, my brother Malik ships books for the Asia/Oceania region (and I ship in bulk to him). Things like this already allow me to bring down the shipping cost with as much as 40% compared to sending everything from my home…

An option for you could be that I send it with regular mail (without tracking, without insurance). But given the nature of the book, which is quite heavy (1.3kg), it is possibly not going to make much of a difference. Do you need me to investigate this option for you?

It’s really true… from Europe, both NZ and Australia are the hardest options to ship to. If only I would sell a reasonable amount of books there, I’d ship in bulk in a heartbeat!

      cheers, anton

i totally understand. if you could look into cheaper options for me that would be great. If nothing can be done i may have to wait until i can spare the cash – but its always good knowing my money is going to somebody doing something cool.
